Marti Fessenden and Suzanne Schultz • 202 W. Benson Street

Marti and Suzanne purchased their Craftsman bungalow in 1995 from Kim Bullard, the keyboardist for Crosby, Stills & Nash. The home was a single story, two-bedroom, one-bath classic bungalow, built in the 1920s.

In 1997 the homeowners renovated the kitchen - removing the butler’s pantry wall and opening up area between the dining room and the kitchen to create a bar counter, improving cabinets and providing space for updated appliances. The original butler’s pantry cabinet was moved but maintained as part of the updated kitchen.

Throughout the home are artifacts and pieces from their international travels, including poppy harvest tools from Nepal, a painting and ceramics from Italy, woven cloth hangings from Indonesia and Peru and wooden masks and bowls from Africa. In the dining room hangs a painting of the homeowner’s childhood home in Winter Park, Florida.

In 2000, a second story, designed by architect Simon Eisenger, was added. The architect’s primary goal was to design a contemporary and unique space while maintaining the intimate and historical feel of the neighborhood. This addition added two bedrooms, a bath, a large den/studio, upstairs laundry, nursery and large walk-in closet. Notable features upstairs include a curved bedroom wall at the top of the stairs, a clerestory at the roof’s peak between the master bedroom and studio and a deep set niche to mirror the large high window between the bath and remaining space. The master bathroom has a two-sink vanity hand crafted by a local woodworker/furniture designer and features a large open two-headed shower. Note the large mirror handcrafted by local artisan Margaret Taylor in the master bedroom.

The most recent renovation is the two-car garage behind the home with an upstairs studio apartment designed by local architect Steve Roberts. This portion of the home will not be open on the tour but can be seen from the Adams Street side. The addition is designed to coordinate with the main house and involved extensive grading of the property. In addition to the studio, the family added a wooden deck on the Adams Street side and a screened porch on the west side of the garage. The backyard features a children’s fort, swings and play unit designed and built by local artist Marshall Davis.

The family observes both Hanukkah and Christmas and the holiday décor reflects this.
