Tim and Chris Russell • 309 Adams Street

The Russells have lived in their MAK home since 2005. They chose to live in MAK because of the neighbors, the convenience to downtown Decatur and Oakhurst Village, and the family-friendly atmosphere that Adams Street offers.

The Russell home was designed by Leila Ross Wilburn, who used it as the basis for design #609 in her Southern Homes and Bungalows plan book. The home’s style is generally described as an American Foursquare – a two-story home with painted wood siding.

The home was built in 1915 with four-bedrooms, one-and-a-half-baths, with approximately 2,300 square feet of living space and six fireplaces. The Russells have a collection of personal documents (photos and love letters) from the original owner, Dr. Alton Jones, who left them in the attic.

The home now has four-bedrooms, three-and-a-half-baths and approximately 3,200 square feet of living space. The Russells built an addition on the back of the house that includes a new kitchen , family room, master bath, and bedroom.

The homeowners have also taken pains to restore the home by stripping years of paint off the woodwork and re-finishing and repairing original light fixtures and door hardware. The woodwork and floors in the new spaces match those of the original home. The Russells removed exterior aluminum siding to reveal the original wood siding, repaired water damage in walls and ceilings and restored all six fireplaces.
