Laurie and Joey purchased their circa 1940s American Small House in 2001, and have doubled the living space while remaining sympathetic to the home’s original style. The home had been previously renovated in the 1980s with the addition of the staircase, master bedroom and bath and a nursery in the upstairs space. The current homeowners finished a major renovation in 2008 with a three-story L-shaped addition. The lot was dug out level to the road to make room for a garage and mud room on the first floor; the family room with screened porch, the breakfast room and a completely renovated kitchen on the main floor; and on the third floor the master suite and laundry room.As you tour the home, notice the English stained glass window in the office, which adds light to the only room in the house without an outside window. The home is decorated with antique pieces that belonged to Laurie’s grandparents and great-grandparents. The family’s art includes several paintings from local Decatur artists and travel photos from France displayed in the bathroom.
An 88-year-old aunt, who was a florist, will assist with the holiday floral arrangements using greenery from her yard.
