Ann “Joey” Herrera and Mary Goodwin • 403 McDonough

Joey and Mary have lived in MAK at 403 McDonough since 2001. Prior to 2001, they lived in Glendale Estates. Their Glendale Estates home was featured on a Decatur Tour of Homes in the 1990s.

Joey and Mary like living in MAK because of their location across from the Agnes Scott campus and up the street from the Oakhurst Community Garden. They enjoy the idyllic community and environment MAK and Decatur provide. They are enthused about sharing their home’s long and interesting history and have interesting photos from the course of their renovation to display.

Construction and Design

The home was constructed around 1905-1910, making it the oldest house in the neighborhood. It is a side-gabled Craftsman bungalow, one-and-a-half stories, with large front and back dormers and a deep, expansive front porch. The front entrance is spectacular as it opens to the oldest and best preserved rooms with extensive wood trim detail and an original stairway newel post with light fixture.

The home is currently a four-bedroom, three-bath home with a second story sleeping porch and has approximately 3,050 square feet of living space.

Joey and Mary are only the third owners of the home. The initial owners, the Mobleys, lived there until 1989 (with descendants who still live in the Decatur area) when they sold the home to Rex and Ginger Kaney, who then sold it to Joey and Mary in 1999. Throughout its history, the home has been used as a single-family residence with modifications of various rooms to create rental apartments. Areas of the home have been used for a kindergarten and as apartments for Agnes Scott and Columbia Seminary students.

Joey and Mary purchased the home in 1999, but did extensive renovations and repairs on the home before they moved-in in 2001. As part of this renovation, they expanded the second floor living area by adding an expansive matching dormer to the back of the house. They also renovated portions of the home’s interior, including refinishing the main floor woodwork, renovating the kitchen and refurbishing existing - and adding new - heart-of-pine floors. Joey and Mary reused and relocated various windows and doors from throughout the home to new spaces and uses.

Photos of the home’s renovation will be an interesting feature of the 2007 tour.

Collections

The home is decorated with period-detail lighting, claw-foot tubs, period-detail wall paper, and eclectic furniture and art pieces that the couple has collected throughout their travels. The home’s sleeping porch houses original pocket windows that actually slide down into place below the window frame.

Joey and Mary decorate extensively for the holidays (including a large tree in the front foyer and a collection of nativities) and are excited about sharing their home during the 2007 Tour of Homes.
