Robin Miller and Marty Samuels • 416 Adams Street

Robin and Marty have lived at 416 Adams Street since April 2001. They enjoy living on Adams Street and within MAK because of their appreciation for the neighborhood’s historic architecture, mature trees, and proximity to both downtown Decatur and the Oakhurst business district.

Having been involved in numerous Decatur volunteer activities over the last six years, they are thrilled to be a part of the 2007 Tour of Homes. They want to assist in highlighting the MAK neighborhood and in sharing their home’s history and its original features.

Construction and Design

The home is a Leila Ross Wilburn-designed home offered in her Ideal Homes of Today: Suggestions for Home Builders plan book (plan #49). Robin and Marty have conducted research on the history of their home that they will display during the tour.

Constructed in 1924, the home was originally a three-bedroom, one-bath home with approximately 1,570 square feet of living space on the main floor. In the mid-1990s, it was renovated and the attic was expanded into a second floor. The home is now a one-and-a-half story, four-bedroom, three-bath home with approximately 2,600 square feet of living space and two fireplaces (one wood-burning, one coal-burning). The home’s renovation won a residential Decatur Design Award in 1997.

Robin and Marty have beautiful pieces of period furniture on display in their home. Since 2001 they have updated the home’s exterior and interior, and in 2007 they built a large rear porch addition in the same spirit and manner as the open veranda at the front of the home.

Robin and Marty plan to display traditional Hanukkah decorations for the tour. They want to limit the tour to the first floor of the home, which should provide a good flow pattern and sufficient understanding of the home’s most interesting and original features.
