Ramgopal Balakrishnan & Rajee Suri
615 Glendale Ave.

This unique home was built in 1948, soon after the end of World War II. It was constructed with filled concrete block, which offers great protection against hurricanes and potential bomb attacks but was quite a challenge during a renovation in 2008.

Most of the furniture in the home is from India. The master bedroom furniture is teak and dates back almost 100 years. Ram and Rajee bought it at a flea market in Delhi and had it restored. To make the house more “green” they added insulation, changed out some of the original windows for more energy-efficient ones (keeping the original pattern), and added barrels outside to harvest rainwater.

Ram and Rajee love how people in Decatur care about each other. The winding tree-lined streets make for great walks. The old-growth trees provide much grace. The sounds of children playing, biking, and skateboarding ring out often in their neighborhood.
