Sinclair Station in Oakhurst Village
715 East Lake Drive
Originally built in 1939, the Sinclair Station has been a car repair ship, a fruit stand and a rib shack in addition to a gas station.
It was purchased in 2001 by Wayne and Laura Lee Allen. The building has become a place where Wayne gets together with his buddies who collect vintage cars and motorcycles. He also uses it as a studio to pursue his hobby, photography.
The station was built in a design that typified Sinclair Stations in those days, called the Castle Style. During the restoration, pictures of old Sinclair Stations on old road maps were consulted to make the restoration as authentic as possible.
Signage was created for the station based on old ads from Decatur High School yearbooks, using the common pitch, “Personal Attention to Washing and Greasing” with the original phone number included.
There is an ancient Coke machine in the office, as well as an early television set. Along with other service station paraphernalia, there are photos of a much younger Wayne when he used to race motorcycles.
