Julia Thompson Smith Chapel
Agnes Scott College, 141 E. College Ave.
The Contemporary Gothic chapel, named for an Agnes Scott alumna, was dedicated in spring 2008. It stands on a sloping site between the Alston Campus Center and the Mary Brown Bullock Science Center and welcomes people of all faiths for prayer, contemplation and worship. The chapel seats approximately 110 people and includes a multi-faith meditation room.
The building’s design upholds the principles of organic architecture espoused by Frank Lloyd Wright. These include harmony with natural surroundings, close relationships among design elements, and generous use of natural light. The chapel is a model of sustainability, with large overhangs that reduce heat gain and a water runoff collection system. It won a 2009 Decatur Design Award for New Construction and the Brick Industry Association’s 2009 Brick in Architecture award.
A distinctive landscaped garden surrounding the chapel provides spaces for gathering and meditation.
